When I was a young girl (1950’s era) conversations about sexuality and reproductive issues were strictly ‘adult’ topics.
Like many young children at that time I was very curious when I saw the once flat belly of any female in the community begin to expand.
I got the courage one day to ask my aunt what was happening with this older girl who used to take time out to play with me.
‘She swallowed pumpkin seeds’ came the reply.
I suppose this was just a story for a1950’s city kid for whom growing pumpkins were not a part of my everyday experiences.
Nor do I recall seeing a man with a ‘beer belly’ in those early years
